Abstract
Minimal research efforts have focused on how and why individuals make the decision to enter a hospice program. Research-based knowledge of factors that have an effect on an individual's decision to accept the hospice benefit will empower healthcare providers with the ability to assist patients as they make the informed decision to begin hospice care. The purpose of this qualitative study was to identify themes that influence an individual's decision to accept the hospice benefit. Four major themes were identified: (1) facing needs associated with progression of terminal illness, (2) family support of the decision to enter hospice, (3) honest and direct communication from members of the healthcare team about disease progression, and (4) familiarity with the care provided by hospice. Knowledge of these themes will enable healthcare providers to support individuals making this decision.
