"The Role of the Nurse in Combating Human Trafficking" (February) indicates that nurses may not be adequately prepared to recognize the signs of this problem.

I'm now an RN on a medical-surgical unit-and a student pursuing a bachelor of science in nursing-and I've previously worked in pediatric outpatient settings in New York City. I've sometimes questioned whether I've missed out on identifying crucial problems, such as patients suffering emotional abuse that may have been related to human trafficking.

The magnitude of the problem of human trafficking makes this nursing's business. Our vigilance and sensitivity as health care providers may not end this travesty, but implementing appropriate strategies can help us to focus on and identify this devastating problem.
