Unsolicited Endorsements

Recently, I experienced two special moments regarding the benefits of JCN. First, I have been encouraging a young lady from our church who is about to enter nursing school. I was considering getting her a subscription to JCN but first wanted to see if she was interested. I gave her a copy of the journal on a Sunday. Wednesday evening, she approached me eagerly and said, "You are getting me in so much trouble. I really need to study for exams this week but I keep sneaking in time to read the journal between other things. I can't put it down. I love it. This is why I am going into nursing. It really spoke to my heart." Guess I'll get that subscription for her.

The next evening I was teaching my first night of Nursing Research with a new class of RN-BSN students. During a break, one of the students approached me with the current issue of JCN in her hands. (She had no clue that I had a long-time connection with the journal as a subscriber, reviewer, and occasional author.) She handed me the journal and said, "I just love this journal. Is there any way I could use an article from it in this class?" I was familiar with the journal issue so I knew the cover article was a qualitative research report. I told her she could review that article for an assignment.

Within 2 days I saw both the personal and the academic value of the content, and witnessed two very real, unsolicited endorsements of JCN. Not a bad average!!

Intimate Partner Violence Hits Home

Reading "Feeling Shame: Insights on Intimate Partner Violence" (Vol. 28, No. 1), I think the author thoroughly covered a great deal of information and obviously her research. However, I was concerned that potential safety concerns for the parish nurse were not addressed. Parish nurses must be aware of potential dangers and have resources for protecting themselves from those abusing the ones he or she is trying to help. For nurses who may be interested in establishing programs in their churches, it is imperative that the safety of the "helpers" be addressed.

An excellent resource [mentioned in the article] for those living with violence is The National Domestic Violence hotline at 800-799-7233 (hearing impaired 800-787-3224) or http://www.thehotline.org/. Personnel are available 24/7 to refer callers to local numbers for help/victim advocacy services anywhere in the United States. Calls are anonymous and confidential.
