We should applaud the steps taken by the academic medical center described in "An Evidence-Based Approach to Taking Charge" (Cultivating Quality, September 2010) to train, educate, and develop effective leadership among nurses who take on the critical role of charge nurse. To be effective, these nurses must receive specialized, formal training. In fact, I believe the curriculum should be expanded to include information about business, law, time and priority management, and the need to evaluate the efficiency of each nursing action and process.
