Abstract
Dialysis patients often experience hyperphosphatemia, a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. The purpose of this pilot was to evaluate the effectiveness of a 4-month nutrition theme game, "National Fosphorus League Phootball," in improving serum phosphorus levels and calcium-phosphorus products among 66 hemodialysis patients. At baseline, mean serum phosphorus and calcium-phosphorus product were 5.37 mg/dL +/- 1.71, (1.73 mmol/L) and 47.7 +/- 15.6, respectively. After 4 months, mean serum phosphorus levels decreased to 4.86 mg/dL +/- 1.67, (1.56 mmol/L) and mean calcium-phosphorous products decreased to 45.1 +/- 15.6. Implementation of creative educational strategies may be effective in improving biochemical values of hemodialysis patients.
