Abstract

Heart failure (HF) is a major worldwide health problem. Thiamin and magnesium are of interest in this condition since deficiencies are common and compromise myocardial function. In turn, there is an inverse relationship between vitamin D status and cardiovascular mortality. Thiamin supplementation improves HF in those that are deficient and magnesium supplementation appears beneficial for those with HF and arrhythmias. The dietitian's role in HF should include an evaluation of micronutrient status. Indeed, the dietitian is in a key position to identify the need for supplementation and to advocate for monitoring of these nutrients.
