Abstract
Exercise and physical activity facilitate positive health benefits for people with diabetes. There are, however, risks and challenges associated with exercising that need to be addressed to maximize health and ensure safety. The purpose of this article is to present information about starting and performing an exercise program and about the associated potential risks, such as hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia, with exercising. A discussion of exercise risks that may arise with microvascular and macrovascular complications of diabetes is presented.
