This gerontological resource book is highly recommended for any nurse caring for older adults in the acute- and critical-care settings. It provides comprehensive evidence-based recommendations for interventions to assist nurses in all aspects of care and is appropriate for novice to expert nurses wishing to improve care for critically ill elderly patients.

In this third edition of this book, the authors strive to provide a complete clinical reference for improving the care of older adults. There are 4 parts to the book: the Context for Critical Care Nursing of Older Adults, Social Aspects of Critical Care Nursing of Older Adults, Foundations for Clinical Care of Critically Ill Older Adults, and Approaches to Complex Clinical Issues in Critically Ill Older Adults. Each part is further subdivided into chapters, each of which deals with a specific aspect of the part, such as the Critical Care Environment, Ethical Decision Making, Pain, and Pressure Ulcer Prevention and Management, to name just a few. Part 1 includes an overview of the book and a chapter that delineates the various standards for best practice for the care of the elderly and how they interface with each other.

The contents of the chapters are well organized, with subheadings in each chapter. An index at the end of the book allows the reader to hone in on specific areas of interest, which may be discussed in several areas of the book. The chapters include tables, graphs, and charts, when appropriate, as well as tips and highlights offset by a box and bullet-point format. The chapters also include summaries at the end of the chapter content, case studies to assist in understanding the concepts of the chapters, and reference lists.

This book would be an excellent resource on any inpatient unit, or in the reference library of clinical nurse specialists and other advanced practice nurses.
