Nephrology nurses specialize in caring for patients who have, or are at risk for, kidney disease. These patients are complex and often have several comorbid conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and hypertension. Nurses caring for patients in end stage renal disease (ESRD) should have knowledge in hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, transplant, continuous renal replacement therapy and other extrcorporeal therapies.
Urology nurses focus on illnesses that affect the entire urinary tract including the bladder, kidney, and urethra. These nurses care for conditions such as kidney stones, urinary tract infections, and cancer. They also care for patients undergoing procedures such as vasectomy and prostate surgery.
