Endoscopy units are often the most frequent users of conscious sedation. Staff must be capable of ensuring patient safety during a medical emergency. Orientation of new staff stresses the standards of care for sedation and the use of the emergency equipment. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Basic Cardica Life Support (BCLS) are only required every two years, but evidence based research concludes that more frequent review and active participation increase the level of performance during emergency interventions. The presentation will address research related to knowledge retention, how active participation improves performance, algorithyms for three emergency situations, and the steps we used to develop a mock code team in our endoscopy unit. The presentation will explore the concept of establishing unit-based competencies to maintain proficiency levels. The presenters will review how they developed a mock code team and their participation in the production of a mock code video. Mock code teams provide a gateway to improved performance in emergency situations.
