Nutrition Today is pleased to welcome 4 new Editorial Advisory Board members, Gordon Jensen, MD, PhD; Ailsa Welch, PhD, SRD R.PHNutr; Nicola McKeown, PhD, FDAA; and Joanne Guthrie, MPH, RD. Each brings wonderful experience in his or her field to the journal.
Gordon Jensen is the head of the Department of Nutritional Sciences in the College of Health and Human Development at Pennsylvania and a leader in clinical nutrition. His research focuses on geriatric nutrition concerns, including obesity in older adults and nutrition assessment and nutritional status in elderly populations. He treats patients who experience severe weight loss, anorexia, pancreatitis, bowel obstruction, and other intestinal disorders. Jensen is immediate past president of the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition and is an active member of the American Society for Clinical Nutrition and the American Society for Nutritional Sciences. Jensen received his PhD from Cornell University and his MD from Cornell University Medical College. He completed his residency training in internal medicine and his fellowship training in nutrition at New England Deaconess Hospital.
Dr Ailsa Welch is a lecturer in nutritional epidemiology in the School of Medicine at the University of East Anglia, United Kingdom. Previously, she was a key researcher in the EPIC-Norfolk (European Prospective Investigations Into Cancer and Nutrition) and EPIC-Europe studies of diet, cancer, and other chronic diseases for 15 years at the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom. Her research interests are fish intake and n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, osteoporosis and nutrition, dietary intakes, surveys and methodologies, measurement error, acid-base balance, and public health interventions. She has published more than 140 peer-reviewed articles. She is a member of the British Dietetic Association (BDA) Research Committee and was chair of the committee and a member of the BDA Council between 2007 and 2008. She is group leader of the Norfolk and Suffolk Metabolic and Endocrine Specialty Group of the Comprehensive Local Research Network, a member of the National Metabolic and Endocrine Specialty Group, and a member of the European micronutrient Recommendations Aligned network for development of evidence-based recommendations for European Micronutrient Dietary Guidelines.
Nicola McKeown is a scientist in the Nutritional Epidemiology Department at the Jean Mayer US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University and an assistant professor at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University. Her research efforts focus on the role of dietary carbohydrates and lifestyle factors in the development of insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes. She is particularly interested in the health benefits of whole grains and the use of biomarkers (ie, alkylresorcinols as a biomarker of whole grains) to validate dietary intakes in observational studies. Nicola received a bachelor of science in nutrition degree from the University of Ulster in Northern Ireland and a doctorate in nutritional epidemiology from the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom.
Joanne F. Guthrie is assistant deputy director for nutrition in the Food Assistance and Nutrition Research Program at Economic Research Services (ERS). In that position, she oversees ERS research and evaluation studies with a special focus on USDA child nutrition programs and on nutrition education provided through food assistance programs (such as Food Stamp Nutrition Education). She is also ERS' representative to the USDA's Human Nutrition Coordinating Committee and Dietary Guidance Working Group. Her research interests are assessment of dietary intake and the factors that influence it, and nutrition education research and evaluation. Joanne previously worked with the US Food and Drug Administration and at several USDA agencies, including the Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion, Human Nutrition Information Service, and the Agricultural Research Service. She is a former Peace Corps Volunteer Nutritionist and National Health Service Corps Nutritionist. Welcome aboard Gordon, Ailsa, Nicola, and Joanne!
