Working as a nurse in several areas of health care throughout my career has allowed me to witness the effects of delayed care among different demographics. The article "Americans Are Delaying Health Care Because of High Costs" (In the News, June) cited inflation and debt as key factors among those who opt to delay care. African Americans, however, face additional barriers that cause them to delay care, including lack of access to quality care, medical mistrust, and perceived racism in the health care delivery system.1, 2

Health care institutions and providers must work collectively to foster an environment where African American patients feel confident using the available resources to meet their health care needs.
