COVID vaccines are safe for young children. As of May, only 13% of children six months to four years of age had received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine. Parents report concerns about lack of research and vaccine safety as the primary reasons they won't vaccinate their young children. Findings of a national study in the July Pediatrics may allay those fears. Researchers analyzed safety outcomes in over 245,000 children five years and younger who received either the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccine over a nine-month period and found no cases of serious vaccine-related adverse events within 21 days of vaccination. This included myocarditis and pericarditis, two conditions that previous studies had identified as a rare adverse event in adolescent males and young men. As the authors note, the results of this study "can provide reassurance to clinicians, parents, and policymakers."
