Transportation barriers may have serious health implications for cancer survivors. A new study that appeared online April 25 in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute found poorer outcomes among cancer survivors who experienced delayed care due to a lack of transportation, including being three times more likely to use the ED and having double the mortality risk. In an American Cancer Society press release, senior author Xuesong Han notes that delayed care "can lead to missed appointments, delayed diagnoses, treatment interruptions, and incomplete follow-up care." The American Cancer Society recently started a Road to Recovery program to provide cancer patients with transportation to and from treatment. It is currently available in several communities, with plans to expand later this year.
