Nursing homes will be getting an increase in their Medicare Part A payments. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is proposing a 3.7% net increase in the payment rate for skilled nursing facilities for fiscal year 2024. However, minimum staffing requirements were not included in the proposed rule. The CMS issued a request for information earlier in the year and was conducting a study to determine the minimum level and type of staffing nursing homes need to provide safe, high-quality care. Currently, federal law only requires that staffing be "sufficient to meet nursing needs of residents." The American Hospital Association and the American Health Care Association are both lobbying against mandated staffing ratios for nursing homes, citing current health care workforce shortages.
