Nursing home staff and residents not up to date with COVID-19 vaccines and boosters. According to a Kaiser Family Foundation analysis of federal data reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), only 45% of nursing home residents and 22% of staff were up to date with their COVID-19 vaccines by late 2022. The analysis used the CDC definition of up to date, meaning residents and staff may have had the initial two-shot vaccine (87% did) as well as early boosters but did not have the bivalent booster available last fall. It noted wide state-by-state variation in compliance with the latest CDC booster recommendations for nursing home residents, ranging from 73% in South Dakota to 24% in Arizona. For staff, the range went from a high of 48% in California to 10% in Alabama. Nursing home residents face greater risks of poor outcomes with COVID-19 due to their age and infirmity.
