The CDC turns to a nurse to lead a major overhaul of the agency. Mary Wakefield, PhD, RN, FAAN, has been appointed to reorganize the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) with a focus on public health priorities and more agile responses to disease outbreaks. Wakefield's task is to rebuild public trust and confidence in the CDC, following a series of agency missteps during the COVID-19 pandemic and monkeypox outbreak, including delays in responding and botched communication. In addition to her nursing background, Wakefield brings extensive administrative and policy experience to the job, including appointments during the Obama administration as acting deputy secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and, before that, as administrator of the Health Resources and Services Administration.
