Drug-resistant infections skyrocketed in 2020, mainly due to effects of COVID-19. According to an analysis by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), resistant hospital-onset infections and deaths both rose by 15%, though the analysts believe the rate may be much higher because it doesn't include data on nine of the 18 pathogens included in the CDC's 2019 report on antibiotic resistance threats. In the first year of the pandemic, nearly 30,000 people died from antimicrobial-resistant infections, 40% of whom got the infection while hospitalized. The CDC reports that there was an upward trend in antibiotic resistance infections in the five years before the pandemic, and limited access to health care services during the pandemic allowed the resistant infections to spread unchecked in 2020.
