New IHI report released to advance patient safety. The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) has released Safer Together: A National Action Plan to Advance Patient Safety, which outlines a total systems approach to safety and calls for collaboration among all stakeholders and coordination across the health care continuum. The plan offers 17 recommendations centered on four foundational priorities: culture, leadership, and governance; patient and family engagement; workforce safety; and learning system. In the workforce safety section, recommendations of particular importance to nurses include that health care systems "commit to workforce physical, psychological, and emotional safety and wellness, and full and equitable support of workers."
