Survival is improving in sports-related sudden cardiac arrest. A recent study found a threefold increase in survival following a sports-related sudden cardiac arrest in young and middle-aged athletes. Sudden cardiac arrest is the most common cause of sudden death in athletes. In this study, Karam and colleagues used data from the French National Institute of Health and Medical Research to examine the incidence, management, and survival of people who experienced a sports-related sudden cardiac death between 2005 and 2018. During that period the incidence remained constant, but survival improved significantly. The authors credit prompt management, including bystander interventions, for the improvement.
