The goal of the educational sessions is to examine the effects of COVID-19 on children through an Interprofessional Education (IPE) simulation to guide future health care professionals to assess physical, social, and emotional factors children face during the pandemic. Three 60-minute virtual simulation sessions were designed for first-semester students from the graduate entry clinical nurse leader (CNL) program, medicine, social work, pharmacy, and nutrition. Prior to the sessions, students are assigned readings covering pediatrics and COVID-19. Objectives for the first session include identification of the roles of health care professionals and recognition of signs and symptoms of pediatric patients with COVID-19. The second session objectives address COVID-19 and social determinants of health; students attend a lecture provided by interdisciplinary health care professionals. The objectives of the third session are to conduct an interview with an 8-year-old, who has tested positive for COVID-19, and the mother and to develop a collaborative plan of care. Questionnaires are administered after the sessions to determine whether session objectives were met. Future health care providers must be well educated on the comprehensive effects of the virus. Focus on pediatrics and COVID-19 helps learners gain a greater understanding of the care for a child and family unit in clinical practice.
