Wound Care Strategies, Inc, Harrisburg, PA, has introduced its newest versions of wound, skin, and ostomy software: TriAssess with AutoMinder. TriAssess software captures clinical (health), financial (chargeable items), and functional (patient satisfaction) data for advanced reporting and functionality.
Three versions of TriAssess software are available: Premier, for the hospital-owned outpatient skin and wound care department; Elite, for the physician and nonphysician practitioner; and Professional and Professional+, for the clinician in the hospital setting.
AutoMinder, which is patent-pending, is a clinical and operational decision support system that is standard with the TriAssess Premier Version and optional with other versions.

3M Health Care, St. Paul, MN; ConvaTec, Skillman, NJ; Ross Products Division, Abbott Laboratories, Columbus, OH; and The Kendall Company, Mansfield, MA, were among the winners of the 2005 Best in Class Award from Healthcare Products Information Services (HPIS), Ambler, PA. Awards were presented in 34 categories, ranging from wound care and diagnostics to gloves and cardiology products (Table 1).
Winners were determined using HPIS data on dollar volume for national product sales through medical/surgical and clinical laboratory distribution chains.

National Healing Corporation (NHC), Boca Raton, FL, announced that New York-based Morgan Stanley Venture Partners and Foster City, CA-based BA Venture Partners have become majority stakeholders in the corporation. NHC manages more than 20% of the nation's managed wound healing centers, specializing in the treatment of chronic and unresponsive conditions.
NHC has also teamed with Ohio State University for a study to discover why some wounds heal and others do not. The study's objective is to screen the human genome to identify patterns of gene expression in vascular cells, with a focus on diabetic foot ulcers. Cells will be captured from biopsies collected from wounds that have both responded and not responded to clinical care. The first patient in the study was enrolled in June at Ohio State University Hospital East, Columbus, OH.

A guideline for the assessment, management, and treatment of contact dermatitis was recently developed by the British Association of Dermatologists. The guideline has been posted on the National Guideline Clearinghouse Web site.
Various classifications of contact dermatitis, patch testing procedures, and intervention and treatment for irritant contact and allergic contact dermatitis are among the topics discussed. A summary of recommendations is supported by the levels of evidence and recommendation grades.

CIGNA HealthCare Administration, the Durable Medical Equipment Carrier for Region D, recently changed its name to CIGNA Government Services, LLC. The name change will be phased in over an extended period, but will be immediately reflected on the organization's Web site, publication, and telephone system. The company stated that its name change signifies its daily business operations as a Medicare Part B and durable medical equipment carried for government health care programs.

Misonix, Inc, Farmingdale, NY, has received a Canadian Device License for the Misonix SonicOne Ultrasonic Wound Debridement System. Regulatory approval in Canada follows the June 2005 announcement that Misonix had received clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration to market the product for the specific purpose of wound debridement.
In clinical tests at hospitals in Milan, Italy; Tempe, AZ; and Brooklyn, NY, use of the Misonix Ultrasonic Wound Debridement System resulted in excellent granulation of the wound bed with minimal or no bleeding at the wound site. Health care providers can easily distinguish tissue types and stop debridement when the viable tissue bed is reached.

Vasamed, Minneapolis, MN, and Unetixs Vascular Inc, Quonset, RI, have entered into a contractual agreement under which Unetixs Vascular will distribute Vasamed's SensiLase Microvascular Assessment System in the United States. This noninvasive monitoring system is used to assess diabetic foot ulcers.

Through its subsidiary, Innocoll Technologies, Innocoll, Inc, Ashburn, VA, has entered into an agreement with Medexis SA, Athens, Greece, for the development of a wound healing product based on Innocoll's CollaRx membrane technology.
The product will incorporate an oily extract of the Alkanna tinctoria plant, which is the active ingredient in Helixderm ointment, approved and marketed in Greece as a drug of botanical origin. The product has antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and wound healing properties through accelerated tissue granulation and epithelization. Innocoll's CollaRx membrane technology is a biocompatible and fully bioresorbable, collagen-based film, composed of purified Type I native fibrillar collagen.
