Uterus transplants are moving from the realm of research to clinical practice. The rollout of this procedure is gaining speed despite only seven years and fewer than 35 live births since the first successful uterus transplant was performed in Switzerland. The American Society for Reproductive Medicine continues to recommend that the procedure-for women born without a uterus or with other uterine conditions-be performed only as part of approved research protocols. However, uterus transplant programs outside the clinical trial context are already underway at Baylor University Medical Center, the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and the University of Pennsylvania. Currently, the procedure, estimated at $300,000, is not covered by insurance, though Baylor has committed to covering the costs of 25 uterine transplants from deceased donors over the next five years.
