New Jersey passes legislation to improve pregnancy outcomes. In July, New Jersey governor Phil Murphy signed into law a bill to improve maternal and infant health by providing new mothers with RN home visits. New Jersey has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the nation, particularly among Black women who are seven times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than White women. The bill provides every new parent, including adoptive parents and those who suffer stillbirths, with a free home visit from an RN within two weeks of giving birth or adopting, filling a gap in care and support during the crucial period between birth and the first postpartum visit, usually scheduled at six weeks. Parents will also be entitled to two more visits during the first three months.
