Many children worldwide orphaned by COVID-19. As of April 30, more than 1.5 million children worldwide had lost their primary caregivers to COVID-19, with 1 million of those losing parents, most often their fathers. Authors of a July 31 study in the Lancet used mortality and fertility data to calculate the rates of COVID-19 deaths of parents and custodial grandparents in 21 countries in Europe, the Americas, Africa, Southeast Asia, the Eastern Mediterranean, and the Western Pacific. The United States was one of five countries with the highest reported number of orphaned children based on the loss of at least one parent.
