Closing time: Congress2005 to end on a high note
Nursing Management 's Congress2005 ends with three of our top presenters. Sean Clarke, RN, CRNP, PhD, associate director, Center for Health Outcomes and Policy Research, University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, Philadelphia, Pa., kicks off the morning with "The Question of Staffing Ratios: What the Research Data Really Show."
"An explosion of research over the past 5 years has stimulated much discussion and policy activity around nurse staffing issues in hospitals," says Clarke. "We'll review in detail what research tells us-and doesn't yet indicate-about safe staffing and discuss implications of this body of studies for leaders in hospital nursing."
In "Privileged Interruption: A Call to Caring," Jeff Doucette, RN, CEN, CHE, CNAA,BC, MS, associate operating officer, Duke University Medical Center, Raleigh, N.C., seeks to help nurses regain their passion for the art of nursing.
"Time that once was dedicated to spending quality time at the patient's bedside has been usurped by paperwork and administrative duties," says Doucette. "Today's work culture leaves many of us wondering why we're doing this to ourselves day in and day out. This session will reignite your passion for caring and help you reexamine your commitment to moving our profession forward."
Diann B. Uustal, RN, MS, EdD, president/consulting educator, clinical ethicist, Educational Resources in HealthCare, Inc., Soddy Daisy, Tenn., will help us end this year's conference.
"Too many of us are living a lifestyle that's hectic and work oriented, leaving little time for nourishing our own souls and creating healthy relationships," she says. "If you agree and this seems all too familiar, then this session will engage and inspire you by providing insightful tips and giving you practical tools for rebalancing work and play, establishing healthy boundaries, and enhancing authentic relationships. We'll challenge you to get real about your lifestyle and take responsibility for rebalancing and adding meaning and value to your life, not just for a day, but for 24/7!!"
