Every year, HIMSS and ANI recognize a deserving member with the HIMSS-ANI Nursing Informatics Leadership Award. This award recognizes an individual who demonstrates significant leadership contributions by optimizing health engagements and care outcomes through information and technology. This award recognizes an individual who demonstrates significant leadership contributions and success and achievement as a nursing informatics leader in a provider, supplier, or academic organization or a professional society. Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society is a cosponsor of ANI, along with AMIA.

 

Gregory L. Alexander, PhD, RN, FAAN, FACMI, professor at Columbia University School of Nursing, received the 2020 HIMSS-ANI Nursing Informatics Leadership Award (https://www.himss.org/resources/himss-ani-nursing-informatics-leadership-award). Dr Alexander is an internationally recognized nursing informaticist and clinical expert with more than 30 years of research and clinical practice leadership. Dr Alexander guides professional societies, organizations, and prestigious journals toward identifying and disseminating new models of care incorporating health information technology to improve safety and quality, particularly in long-term care.

"Receiving the HIMSS-ANI Nursing Informatics Leadership Award is an honor," Dr Alexander said. "As I look through the required criteria, I am humbled that my peers see me as a respected role model, a thought leader and that they are recognizing my contributions to advance professional standards and policy through my sustained research, teaching, and service activities. It is a gift to work with informatics colleagues from all over the world who have legacies of their own. My success is only because I have great colleagues and friends who have worked with me toward similar goals, ultimately to improve the health of people in our world."

 

On March 1, 2020, Dr Alexander assumed a new role as professor at Columbia University School of Nursing, where he will be conducting national research to improve health systems for older adults. Dr Alexander guides evidence-based research teams, is a leader in professional informatics societies and organizations, and is an editorial board member for prestigious journals including CIN: Computers, Informatics, Nursing and section editor for Journal of Gerontological Nursing Technology's Innovations Section. He researches new models of care including technology implementation trends and safety and quality impacts, with a particular focus on long-term care settings.

 

Dr Alexander was recently appointed to serve on the AHRQ National Advisory Council as the only nurse informaticist on the 19-member panel and leads an AHRQ-funded R01 (2013-2022), which is benchmarking national trends in IT adoption and impact on quality measures in nursing homes. He is the AMIA NIWG chair, serves on the ANI Governing Directors, is frequent presenter at HIMSS Global Conference, and was 2017 Fulbright US Scholar.

 

Dr Alexander will receive a symbol of recognition and will be recognized by HIMSS and ANI throughout the year.
