Low rates of COVID-19 in preschool-aged children. In a study in the April Lancet Child and Adolescent Health, researchers found very low rates of COVID-19 among young children attending day care in France from March to May 2020. Among children ages five months to four years at 22 day care centers, only 3.7% were seropositive. Seropositive children were more likely than seronegative children to have a seropositive parent, indicating that the children were most likely infected by their parents, rather than by other children or day care staff. The authors conclude that children in day care are more likely to contract COVID-19 at home than at a day care center. The day care centers followed standard COVID-19 safety precautions, including having small cohorts of six to eight children, disinfecting surfaces, social distancing among staff, and screening for COVID symptoms.
