Nursing workforce crisis looms with 4 million nurses retiring by 2030. In its policy brief, Ageing Well? Policies to Support Older Nurses at Work, the International Centre on Nurse Migration (ICNM) warns of an upcoming global nursing workforce crisis with the expected retirement of more than 4.7 million nurses by 2030. Using data from the World Health Organization's State of the World's Nursing 2020 report, the ICNM points out that 10.6 million new nurses will be needed to both address the existing nurse shortage and replace nurses who retire in the next 10 years. The ICNM brief lays out a 10-point plan to support older nurses, which includes avoiding age discrimination, ensuring occupational health and safety policies that enable well-being, redesigning jobs to optimize the contributions of older nurses, maintaining a pay system that rewards experience, and developing succession plans, among others.
