Esther Myers Receives Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics' Highest Honor
Esther F. Myers, PhD, RDN, FAND, a registered dietitian nutritionist and an internationally known author, lecturer, educator, and researcher in dietetics and evidence analysis, has been named the 2020 recipient of the Marjorie Hulsizer Copher Award, the highest honor bestowed by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the world's largest organization of food and nutrition professionals. She is also an esteemed contributor to Nutrition Today, which makes us especially proud! And, like the award's namesake, Esther also served with a distinguished career in the military, retiring as a colonel in the Air Force before going on to lead the science office at the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and later founding her own consulting firm.
Previously, Myers had a 25-year career in the US Air Force, serving as director of nutritional medicine and as chief military consultant to the Air Force's Surgeon General. She provided key support to the US Department of Agriculture for the formation of the US Department of Agriculture's Nutritional Evidence Library, which supported the development of the federal government's 2010 and 2015 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Since 2007, Myers, a resident of Trenton, Illinois, has been the CEO of EF Myers Consulting Inc, which focuses on collaborative initiatives in international practice-based nutrition research and the dissemination of national and international evidence analysis principles, quality improvement, and change management concepts.
Myers served on the National Academy of Science's Institute of Medicine Committee on Military Nutrition and is a past president of the International Affiliate of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. She received the Academy Foundation's 2013 Edna and Robert Langholz International Nutrition Award; the 2009 Distinguished Alumni Award from North Dakota State University's College of Human Ecology; and the Academy's Distinguished Service Award in 1997, 1998, and 1999.
Myers has represented the Academy at key national and international scientific and policy conferences and has served on numerous task forces for the National Heart Blood and Lung Institute, the International Life Sciences Institute, and the US Department of Agriculture. Myers is a graduate of North Dakota State University. She earned a master's degree from the Ohio State University and a doctorate in human ecology and institutional management from Kansas State University. Congratulations, Esther!
Academy to Present 2020 Medallion Awards to 8 Members for Service to Academy and Profession
Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics will honor 8 registered dietitian nutritionists with the 2020 Medallion Awards, in recognition of outstanding service and leadership in the Academy and the nutrition and dietetics profession. Medallion Awards have honored Academy members each year since 1976. The 2020 Medallion Award recipients are the following:
Jacqueline R. Berning, PhD, RD, CSSD, Castle Rock, Colorado. An Academy member since 1987, Dr Berning is a professor and chair of the Health Science Department at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.
Mary Pat Raimondi Bertacchi, MS, RD, Annapolis, Maryland. An Academy member since 1975, Ms Bertacchi is the former vice president of strategic policy and partnerships at the Academy and a program director at the University of Minnesota.
Kristine Larson Clark, PhD, RDN, FACSM, FAND, State College, Pennsylvania. An Academy member since 1978, Dr Clark is the former director of sports nutrition and an adjunct associate research professor of kinesiology at Penn State University.
Alison B. Evert, MS, RD, CDE, Kirkland, Washington. An Academy member since 1987, Ms Evert is the manager of nutrition and diabetes programs at the University of Washington Neighborhood Clinics.
Joyce A. Gilbert, PhD, RDN, St Charles, Illinois. An Academy member since 1987, Dr Gilbert is the president and CEO of the Association of Nutrition and Foodservice Professionals.
David H. Holben, PhD, MA, MS, RDN, FAND, Oxford, Mississippi. An Academy member since 1985, Dr Holben is a professor of nutrition and hospitality management, the Gillespie Distinguished Scholar, and director of the Office of Food and Nutrition Security at the University of Mississippi.
Sherri L. Jones, MBA, MS, RDN, LDN, SSGB, FAND, Wexford, Pennsylvania. An Academy member since 1987, Ms Jones is a senior improvement specialist at UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Kendra K. Kattelmann, PhD, RDN, LN, FAND, Brookings, South Dakota. An Academy member since 1978, Dr Kattelmann is a distinguished professor and head of the Health and Nutritional Sciences Department at South Dakota State University.
Regan Bailey, PhD, MPH, RD, Elected to the National Academy of Medicine
Kudos to our Nutrition Today Editorial Board member Regan Bailey, PhD, MPH, RD, who was just elected to the National Academy of Medicine as we go to press! More about her accomplishments will follow, but in brief, she has done yeoman work in describing dietary supplement use in the US population and also linked supplements with various health effects. Regan now serves as professor of nutrition at Purdue University. She was a member of the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee 2020-2025.
Zlotkin Joins Nutrition International's Board of Directors
Nutrition International is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Stanley Zlotkin to its Board of Directors. As the inaugural Chief of the SickKids Centre for Global Child Health in Toronto and an active researcher and consultant for governments and United Nations agencies, Dr Zlotkin is a globally respected voice and advocate for pediatric nutrition.
Dr Zlotkin is a professor of pediatrics, public health sciences, and nutritional sciences at the University of Toronto. In 1998, he was approached by UNICEF and asked to find a viable solution for micronutrient malnutrition. The result was the development of micronutrient powders (known as "Sprinkles") for home fortification of complementary foods, ensuring young children receive the necessary nutrition. With support from USAID, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and private foundations, he has since completed multicountry research to prove the benefits of home fortification in controlling micronutrient deficiencies.
For his leadership in global child health, Dr Zlotkin was awarded the HJ Heinz Humanitarian Award in 2001 and the prestigious Canadian Institutes of Health Research National Knowledge Translation Award in 2006. In 2007, he was awarded the order of Canada, the country's highest civilian honor and in 2016, the Order of Ontario.

Riboflavin Scanning Committee Named
An ad hoc committee of The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will be convened to develop a framework for scanning the peer-reviewed published literature on riboflavin that is based on the generic analytic framework for Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) to assess the relation of nutrient intake to health outcomes. The committee will build on the methodology for evidence scanning of nutrients (which have exiting DRIs) to further determine whether there is new and relevant knowledge available that may merit a formal reexamination of DRIs for this nutrient.
