Insufficient evidence to recommend probiotics for gastrointestinal (GI) health. Probiotics have become one of the most commonly used nonvitamin or nonmineral dietary supplements; a fourfold increase in use since 2007 has created a multimillion-dollar global industry despite little evidence to support its use. The American Gastroenterological Association released guidelines in June based on systematic reviews of the efficacy of different strains of probiotics across multiple GI diseases. Use of specific formulations is recommended for only three conditions: Clostridioides difficile in children and adults on antibiotics, prevention of necrotizing enterocolitis in preterm infants, and management of pouchitis.
