FDA approves first drug for peanut allergy in children. The FDA has approved Palforzia, the first drug to combat peanut allergies in children. Over 1 million children have a peanut allergy, some with life-threatening reactions after exposure to even trace amounts. Though Palforzia doesn't cure the allergy, it does lower the risk that exposure to small amounts will cause anaphylaxis. In clinical trials, children who took the medication were able to consume a serving of peanut powder equal to two peanuts without having an allergic reaction. To ensure safe administration, Palforzia is only available through health care facilities, providers, and pharmacists who are certified in its use and enrolled in a Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy program.
