DRUG CONTAINMENT TECHNOLOGY
FIGURE
Baxa Corporation will exclusively distribute in the United States PhaSeal, a closed system for handling antineoplastic drugs that has been documented to reduce or eliminate human exposure to toxic hazards in the workplace. The PhaSeal System consists of disposable containment devices that connect the original drug vial, syringe, and intravenous injection or infusion set together into a completely sealed pathway. The system's double membrane prevents drug leakage and keeps the connections dry. A built-in expansion chamber equalizes system pressure to prevent the release of toxic aerosols and vapors. Hazardous drugs are contained throughout the entire process of drug transfer, preparation, transport, administration, and disposal.

HAND HYGIENE POSTERS
FIGURE
GOJO Industries, Inc., offers three new posters to help promote hand hygiene compliance, with reminders to wash, sanitize, and moisturize hands. All of the posters are available as part of the complete Purell and Provon skin care program. Company officials initiated the program because they believe it's important in building compliance to reinforce the message that clean, moisturized and, in some cases, sanitized skin is healthier for both patients and staff members.

GASTROSTOMY FEEDING SET
FIGURE
Invention Submission Corporation announced that a client submitted a design for the Gravity Feeding Med-Flow, a modified gastrostomy feeding set that will deliver medications and nutritional supplements more efficiently than standard feeding sets. The unit would consist of a conventional gastrostomy feeding set, but would have an added port opposite the feeding port. A rubber seal positioned on the tip of the added port would eliminate the need to disconnect a medication feed in order to administer a nutritional feed. It would also reduce medication leakage while changing tubes, helping nurses to better ensure that patients receive the proper dosages.

NEEDLE PROTECTION SYSTEM
FIGURE
Terumo Medical Corporation announces SurGuard2, which enhances compliance with needlestick safety standards. The device has a unique needle-locking mechanism. An audible click lets the user know that the device is activated and ensures the needle will remain fully engaged in the sheath. The user can activate the safety mechanism with one hand. SurGuard2 offers a thinner, more streamlined sheath, reduced "dead space," a ratchet mechanism that allows the sheath to be positioned so it doesn't obscure the injection site, and a bevel-up, sheath-right needle orientation that allows for low-angle injections.
