Conference chairperson Dennis Sherrod, RN, EdD, kicks off Saturday morning with hot tips on how to thrive in challenging times. Rebecca Rice, RN, will tackle the subject of politics in "The (Real) Politics of Nursing Workforce Legislation: Competing Priorities and Consequences." Concurrently, Kay Clevenger, RN, will present "The Leader as Retention Specialist: Champion Nurse Satisfaction for Your Unit's Success."

 

Sherrod will also present "Developing an Educational Pipeline," which details innovative strategies and models for forging partnerships with nursing schools. Nursing Management 's Editor-in-Chief, Richard Hader, RN, PhD, CNA, CHE, CPHQ, will delineate the "Forces of Magnetism" that have proven to be key recruitment and retention strategies.

 

Later in the day, G. Rumay Alexander, RN, BSN, MSN, EdD, will address diversity in the workplace. Last year, her presentation filled the room and got the audience to its feet. "[She] walked us through cultural diversity utilizing music," says Ann Marie Frazier, RN, MSN, CNA. "Needless to say, we did have fun, we saw the humor, sang a few songs, and were able to depart with a better understanding of the diversity on our units."

 

Sunday's half-day schedule offers topics ranging from creating a healthy work environment and fostering collaboration between practice and recruitment, to nursing workforce analysis and planning and boosting staff morale.

All jazzed up

The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival runs April 23 to April 25 and April 29 to May 2. On Friday, April 30, catch the Dave Bruebeck Quartet performing with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra and the Loyola University Chorus at the Mahalia Jackson Theatre of Performing Arts, Louis Armstrong Park, 8:00 p.m. At the Morris F.X. Jeff Municipal Auditorium, Louis Armstrong Park, 9:00 p.m., Lenny Kravitz and Lucky Dube are scheduled to perform. La Noche Latina, El Gran Combo, and Vivaz will rock the House of Blues, 225 Decatur Street, at 8:00 p.m.

 

On Saturday, May 1, catch Jaheim and Floetry at the Mahalia Jackson Theatre of Performing Arts, Louis Armstrong Park, 9:30 p.m.
