2003 Mover and Shaker Award winners were announced by ILSI NA. Roy L. Fuchs, PhD, who is head of the North American Biotechnology Regulatory Organization, Monsanto Company, won this award for his leadership in regulatory science, particularly in biotechnology. Dr Fuchs made significant contributions to research, leading to development and commercialization of insect-protected plant biotechnology products, including New Leaf potato and Yield Guard corn. For the past 12 years, he has directed development of food, feed, and environmental safety data at Monsanto. Roy is a graduate of Texas A&M University and did postdoctoral work at the Kettering Research Institute and Purdue University.

Joseph A. Scimeca, PhD, Senior Manager Product Safety, Service, Quality and Regulatory Operations, at General Mills, Inc., was the second Mover and Shaker. Before this position, he served as director of food safety and regulatory affairs at the Pillsbury Company and, before that, in toxicology and nutrition positions at Kraft Foods Inc. Joe has been active in ILSI's studies of various food safety issues.

 

Dickinson Named Acting President at CRN

Annette Dickinson, PhD, was recently promoted from the position of vice-president scientific and regulatory affairs to acting president at the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN) Dr Dickinson's expertise is in vitamins and minerals. She was also named to serve a 3-year term on the US Food and Drug Administration's Center for Food Science and Nutrition's Food Advisory Committee. She has authored two books, The Benefits of Nutritional Supplements and Before and After DSHEA, a guide to the Food and Drug Administration's regulation of dietary supplements. Dr Dickinson earned her PhD at the University of Maryland.

 

New Members of ILSI North America Board of Trustees

The ILSI NA Board of Trustees has elected several new trustees for 3-year terms. They include: Dennis M. Bier, MD, Baylor College of Medicine and Director of the Children's Human Nutrition Research Center at Baylor. Dr. Bier is a well-known pediatric endocrinologist and former president of the American Society of Clinical Nutrition.

 

David R. Lineback, PhD, University of Maryland, who directs US Joint Institute for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (JIFSAN). Formerly he was dean, College of Agriculture, University of Idaho, and, before that, head of the Food Science Department at Pennsylvania State University and North Carolina State University. He is active in the Institute of Food Technology and other organizations. Both he and Dr Bier are public trustees.

 

Celeste A. Clark, MS, Vice-President, Corporate and Scientific Affairs, Kellogg Company, joins the ILSI board as an industry trustee. She is responsible for the development of nutrition programs at Kellogg. She is a graduate of Southern University in Baton Rouge, La, and Iowa State University.

 

Ganesh M. Kishore, PhD, is vice-president, technology, at DuPont Company's Agriculture and Nutrition Group. Before that, he served as president, Nutrition Sector and chief biotechnologist at the Monsanto Company. He received his PhD at the All Indian Institute of Science and did his postdoctoral work at the Snell Laboratory at the University of Texas, Austin.

 

Also recommended for an additional term were David Allison, PhD, Professor, University of Alabama, Birmingham; Daniel Azzara, PhD, Vice-President Hershey Foods; James O. Hill, PhD, University of Colorado; Eileen H. Madden, PhD, Nestle USA; R. David C. Macnair, PhD, Campbell Soup Company; Michael W. Pariza, PhD, University of Wisconsin; and Johanna T. Dwyer, DSc, RD, Tufts University Schools of Medicine and Nutrition.
