Cancer Prevention and Detection Workshops for Nurse Educators from Historically Black Colleges and Universities. The Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) (USA) has received funding from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) (Grant # R25 CA 09554-10) to host a series of cancer prevention and early detection programs for nurse educators from the nation's historically black colleges and universities and minority institutions (HBCU/MI). The Cancer Prevention and Early Detection Program for HBCU/MI Nurse Educators seeks to reduce health disparities and cancer mortality among medically underserved African-Americans by integrating information about cancer prevention and early detection among African-Americans into the educational curricula of HBCU/MIs. Over the course of 5 years, two workshops will be held per year to provide nurse educators with training on how to: assess cancer risk; develop educational activities related to cancer prevention and early detection among African-Americans; plan community-based screening programs; access state-of-the-science cancer information using the World Wide Web; integrate information specific to the prevention and detection of cancer among African-Americans into their nursing curricula; understand current research efforts relative to cancer in African-Americans; and communicate with African-American cancer survivors. The program was initiated in response to the fact that African-Americans are more likely to develop cancer than any other racial or ethnic group, and are approximately 33% more likely to die of cancer than the general population. Nurse educators from institutions with a minority enrollment of 30% or greater are eligible to apply. Programs will be conducted in Atlanta (GA), Houston (TX), New Orleans (LA), Washington DC, and Tuskegee (AL). The primary criteria for selection of applicants will include: expressed interest in cancer prevention and early detection among African-Americans; expressed interest in integrating didactic and clinical content related to cancer prevention and early detection among African-Americans into their nursing curricula; opportunity to facilitate teaching and learning experiences within the African-American community; and opportunity to facilitate teaching and learning experiences among African-Americans within their practice setting. Principal Investigator is Sandra Millon Underwood, R.N., Ph.D., F.A.A.N., Professor, University of Wisconsin Milwaukee, American Cancer Society Oncology Nursing Professor, and Northwestern Mutual Life Reserach Scholar. For additional information, contact the Education and Cancer Care Issues Team, Oncolgy Nursing Society, 501 Holiday Drive, Pittsburgh, PA 15220-2749. Notices of upcoming conferences of interest to staff development educators will be printed in Cancer Nursing without charge. Please send information at least four months in advance of desired publication date.
