The Society of Trauma Nurses (STN) seeks to advance the highest level of trauma nursing care across the continuum through leadership, mentoring, innovation, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

STN members are both the brains and the brawn behind the scenes, creating the tools and resources that offer the most utility across the profession of trauma nursing. STN's robust network of committed volunteers is unrivaled! Read on to learn about some of STN's current working group initiatives-and please consider volunteering your time and talent to one of these great endeavors.

GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS AND PUBLIC POLICY COMMITTEE

In early 2016, STN formed the Government Affairs and Public Policy (GAPP) Committee. This is a new, exciting venture to give STN members the resources they need to navigate the legislative and public policy landscape at the local, state, and national levels. Our goal is to increase the advocacy fluency of trauma nurses to enable them to achieve public policy and legislative goals that enhance trauma care. We plan to achieve this goal through hands-on work at the grassroots level including education and mentoring by GAPP experts.

The GAPP Committee is busy developing resources for trauma nurses including:

* The creation of a "legislative tool chest" for nurses to use when interacting with law makers, state and local policy officials, and other important stakeholders.

* The GAPP Committee is planning for an increased presence at the Annual Conference, which will include an educational offering for attendees.

* We will leverage technology and social media to efficiently and effectively disseminate information about government affairs/public policy issues important to trauma nurses.

GERIATRIC SPECIAL INTEREST GROUP

The Geriatric Special Interest Group (SIG) has identified three subcommittees that are focused on:

* Creating resources to assist with the development of geriatric trauma programs,

* Developing injury prevention resources specific to the geriatric patient, and

* Establishing geriatric trauma nursing guidelines.

The Geriatric SIG will release a new version of the Senior Lifestyle & Injury Prevention Program (SLIP) program later this year. The SLIP program includes comprehensive, off-the-shelf education materials designed for seniors and their caregivers. The new SLIP program will be available as a complementary resource for STN members to use in their institutions and communities.

INJURY PREVENTION SIG

STN is pleased to announce that the Injury Prevention SIG just finished coordinating, crafting, and compiling articles for a special injury prevention edition of the Journal of Trauma Nursing. The issue is scheduled to be released in December 2016.
