Watch for Changes to Long-Term Care Resident Assessment Instrument Manual

In case you haven't heard yet, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has made changes to the Long-Term Care (LTC) Resident Assessment Instrument (RAI) Manual for Section M-Skin Conditions, effective October 1, 2016. The CMS has clarified language regarding pressure ulcers that are present on admission or reentry to the LTC facility. The October 1, 2016 version of the RAI manual is posted in draft status on the CMS website. Here's the link to the CMS Minimum Data Set (MDS) page: https://downloads.cms.gov/files/draft_mds_30_rai_manual_v114_may_2016.pdf

Elizabeth A. Ayello, PhD, RN, ACNS-BC, CWON, ETN, MAPWCA, FAAN, Clinical Editor for Advances in Skin & Wound Care, recently provided training on Section M at a CMS-sponsored program for state surveyors, "Steps to Success with MDS."

The Final Version of the RAI manual is expected to be posted in September 2016.
