Coordination of care and collaboration among clinicians in different disciplines is now the expectation, and nurses are responsible for defining their role in this process ("Interprofessional Collaboration and Education," March).
As an RN working in a skilled nursing facility, I believe interprofessional collaboration and education can be used to prepare the health care team to deal more effectively with the chronic complex cases we see in this setting. It would be invaluable to work as part of a multidisciplinary team, in which each member is willing to listen to a colleague's rationale and values the patient's needs above the needs of the health care team.
