The National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel (NPUAP) wishes to thank Drs Baumgarten and Margolis for their thoughtful commentary on the methodologic sections of the NPUAP monograph, "Pressure Ulcers in America: Prevalence, Incidence, and Implications for the Future." The commentary provides a detailed and thought-provoking discussion of epidemiologic concepts. The NPUAP Board of Directors engaged in discussions similar to those presented by Drs Baumgarten and Margolis before finalizing the monograph. The board ultimately decided to recommend simple, accurate, and usable measures that facilitate standardized incidence and prevalence data collection by practitioners in myriad settings.
In the interest of accuracy, the NPUAP wishes to correct a typographical error. The formula for incidence density should read:EQUATION
We apologize for any confusion this error may have created.
The simple, accurate, usable, and standardized measures of incidence and prevalence proposed by the NPUAP are prerequisite to collecting and analyzing the pressure ulcer incidence and prevalence data that will support the clinical and health policy decisions of the next decade.
