Abstract
Osteoporosis affects approximately 10 million Americans; of these, 2 million are men. An estimated 3.5 million additional men are at risk of developing the disease. Individuals with osteoporosis commonly incur fractures of the spine, hip, and forearm. The clinical spectrum of osteoporosis is similar in men and women; however, differences exist in skeletal development, age-related bone loss, modifiable and nonmodifiable risk factors, and secondary causes. Prevention and early detection is achieved through identification of risk factors and secondary causes. Treatment options include risk factor reduction, correction of underlying disease, and use of pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic therapies.
