Rose Muscatine Hauer, MA, RN, passed away on Saturday, October 3, 2009, in New York City. She was 93 years of age. She graduated from the Beth Israel School of Nursing in 1939 and was dean of the School of Nursing and vice president for nursing at Beth Israel Medical Center in Manhattan until her retirement in 1988. She was also a consultant to schools of nursing around the country through the National League for Nursing and helped thousands of foreign nurses come to the United States to join the workforce through her work with the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools.
"She was a chief nurse officer who made rounds in the hospital with the chief medical officer or CEO every day," said Diana Mason, AJN's editor-in-chief emeritus. "She knew the people and the issues on every unit. This gave her credibility and a commanding authority."
Ms. Hauer remained active in nursing nationally and internationally until her death. She is survived by a daughter, Deborah Hauer Schwartz, and a son, Jerome Hauer.
