Caring for pediatric patients during surges. The American Academy of Pediatrics issued updated guidance on caring for pediatric patients during surges in patient volume and acuity, as experienced this winter with the convergence of influenza, respiratory syncytial virus, and COVID-19 outbreaks. The update examines the challenges created by episodes of surge and provides strategies for addressing them across settings. Among challenges universal to all settings are maintaining routine pediatric care, strictly adhering to infection control protocols, recruiting and cross-training health care staff to ensure adequate staffing, and addressing mental health needs. The report notes the importance of collaborative planning with all regional stakeholders, including clinicians, community health agencies, disaster coalitions, and departments of health, to mitigate ongoing resource challenges and avoid exacerbating existing inequities in access to care.
