I write to respond to the January letter to the editor by Colleen Raleigh O'Shaughnessy, JD, BSN, RN, which criticized "An Open Letter from Past Presidents of the American Nurses Association" (November 2020). I disagree.
Many of the policies of the Trump administration were direct affronts to the Code of Ethics and policies of the American Nurses Association (ANA). Also, the ANA encourages nurse involvement in political and legislative advocacy.1
To say nothing in the face of injustice is to provide tacit support. To suggest that nurses remain silent undermines the ANA, its members, and the health of the nation.
