High-quality peer reviewers are absolutely essential to the success of any scientific journal, and JAANP is no exception. I cannot express enough gratitude to those who have given their time and talents to keeping our journal one that health care providers from every discipline seek out as a trusted and esteemed destination for their scientific writing. It is the peer reviewer who points out flaws in thinking, research design, and writing in a thoughtful and helpful way, and in doing so builds a better writer. It is writers who switch chairs and volunteer as reviewers who become even better writers. If you are currently a reviewer, thank you. If you are not, please contact me. A free course is available to help you get started. The reviewers listed at the end of this column served the JAANP in 2019 and made a meaningful contribution to the quality of our journal.

Last month, I promised our readers that in 2020, the Year of the Nurse and Midwife, we would include a highlight of an occurrence in nursing history during each month of the year. This month we celebrate the birthday of Mary Carson Breckinridge, an American nurse and midwife who founded the Frontier Nursing Service (FNS). Breckinridge was born on February 17, 1881, in Memphis, Tennessee. She attended St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing in New York, graduating in 1910. She took graduate courses in public health at Teachers College, Columbia University, and traveled to London to earn a midwifery certificate. Her focus became the care of the poor, especially babies. In 1925, she organized the Kentucky Committee for Mothers and Babies, later renamed the FNS. The members of the FNS formed the organization that became the American Association of Nurse-Midwives. Like many highly educated nurse clinicians of her day, she was clearly an advanced practice nurse before the term was coined. Her life and achievements are far too numerous to list here. Readers are encouraged to read one of the many works detailing the life and career of this inspiring leader (Frontier Nursing University, 2018; Goan, 2008; National Women's Hall of Fame, 2020).
