Story Receives Stunkard Award
Congratulations to Nutrition Today Editorial Board Member, Mary Story, PhD, the recipient of the 2019 Friends of Albert (Mickey) Stunkard Lifetime Achievement Award presented by The Obesity Society during their annual meeting. Mary is a leading scholar in the field of child and adolescent nutrition and child obesity prevention and serves as the Associate Director for Academic Programs at the Global Health Institute at Duke University. She has devoted her research career to the study of child and adolescent nutrition and childhood obesity. Her research has focused primarily on nutrition and diet-related issues of low-income and minority youth and their families, and environmental and behavioral community-based obesity prevention interventions for youth. Dr Story has conducted several National Institutes of Health-funded school- and community-based obesity prevention trials and, since 2005, has directed the Healthy Eating Research program, a national program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation that supports research on environmental and policy strategies to promote healthy eating among children to prevent childhood obesity. She also was the Senior Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health. We are also proud that she is a member of the Nutrition Today Editorial Board. Congratulations to Mary on this well-deserved honor!

Rosenbloom Honored With Medallion Award
Congratulations to our wonderful Sports Nutrition Columnist emerita, Chris Rosenbloom, PhD, RD, on her Medallion Award presented by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics in recognition of outstanding service and leadership in the nutrition and dietetics profession. Chris is the owner of Chris Rosenbloom Food & Nutrition Services, LLC, providing nutrition consulting, writing, and media work to a variety of clients. She is a professor emerita of nutrition at Georgia State University, and for 30 years, she held various teaching and administrative positions at Georgia State, including department chair and associate dean for academics. She has more than 20 years of experience as a sports dietitian, at the Georgia Tech Athletic Association and the Georgia State Athletic Association. Chris is on the advisory board for the International Olympic Committee Sports Nutrition Diploma program and is listed in the USOC Sports Dietitian Registry. From 2000 to 2008, she served on the Gatorade Sports Science Institute's Education Advisory Board and chaired the board from 2006 to 2008. She is an active member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics at the local, state, and national level. She served as a national media spokesperson for 11 years and chaired the Sports, Cardiovascular and Wellness Nutrition (SCAN) practice group. She was honored with SCAN's Achievement Award in 2008. She edited the fifth edition of SCAN's "Sports Nutrition: A Practice Manual for Professionals" published in 2012, and the sixth edition is in progress. She is also the Editor in Chief for the online Sports Nutrition Care Manual, which was launched in September of 2011. She was a 4-year member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Position Committee (chair from 2013 to 2015), which oversees the development of all position and practice papers. She has published research in top-tier peer-reviewed journals, has contributed chapters to edited books, and continues to serve as a peer reviewer for many journals. Congratulations, Chris!

Catching up on some Washington luminaries, David "Dave" Schmidt, who was longtime director of the International Food Information Council, is now the Executive Director of the AOAC International, the scientific association dedicated to analytical excellence in Washington. Sheila Fleischacker, JD, PhD, RD, formerly of USDA and National Institutes of Health, and a faculty member at Georgetown University Law School, has just published an article on legislative and executive branch developments affecting the USDA's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program in the Journal of Food Law and Policy. Andrew Shao, PhD, formerly of the Council of Responsible Nutrition, is now the Vice President of Scientific and Regulatory Affairs Global Regulatory Lead of ChromaDex Corporation, a dietary supplement company.
In Memoriam
Theodore Van Itallie, MD
Dr Theodore "Ted" Van Itallie, emeritus professor of medicine at Columbia University and Chief of Medicine at St Luke's Hospital in New York, died at the age of 99 years. Many former students and colleagues have benefited from his wise guidance and counsel over the years. He was one of the earliest and most vocal advocates of clinical nutrition and public health efforts to deal with obesity. He was the first to demonstrate that weight loss was due to reduction in calories, and not to changes in protein, carbohydrate, or any other nutrient. He founded the Obesity Research Center at St Luke's Hospital in New York, which was the first obesity center supported by a National Institutes of Health grant. He was also a visiting professor and member of the board of trustees at the American University of Beirut. After retiring from Columbia nearly 30 years ago, he continued to publish articles and consult on clinical nutrition research until a few weeks before he died. Nutrition Today extends its sympathy to his family and many friends.
Richard L. Hall, PhD
Richard "Dick" Hall, PhD, a longtime leader in the flavor industry and a distinguished organic chemist at McCormick and Company for many years, died at 96 years old in Maryland. He was active in many food and nutrition organizations as well as President of the Flavor Extract Manufacturers' Association. Although he never called attention to it, Dick was also a navigator who flew many missions over northern Europe during World War II, and he was truly a war hero. We extend condolences to his family.
