The ICN issues position statement on evidence-based safe nurse staffing. The importance of appropriate nurse staffing to patient safety, quality of care, and improved patient outcomes-as well as to nurses' well-being-is emphasized in a new position statement from the International Council of Nurses (ICN). The ICN's recommendations include making decisions about nurse staffing that are evidence based, not substituting RNs with less qualified workers, identifying safety thresholds related to staffing in different settings, making timely adjustments to staffing based on changes in patients' needs, and reviewing staffing on a regular basis. The statement also calls for nurses to make formal reports about unsafe nurse staffing situations.
