Abstract
If you're looking for a temporary fix, there are wonderful contract and travel nurses out there, but that's less than desirable when the focus is on long-term retention. You may be entering a revolving door that's difficult to exit. A slight pause when you ask the interviewee about willingness to work night shift or a sideways glance when you discuss being on call are red flags that retention may not be possible with him or her. Short staffing is exhausting for all involved, but take caution: turning a blind eye to the red flags and extending the offer anyway only to accept a resignation within 90 days will further the exhaustion.
