Whether a patient is an "addict" is irrelevant. Addicts are just as entitled to pain relief as nonaddicts. I find it highly unethical for a medical professional to try to play God and decide who deserves pain relief and who doesn't. Someone's addiction shouldn't have bearing on whether that person receives pain treatment. There's a problem if someone's bias against addicts influences her or his decision to give or withhold pain meds.
