I was sorry to learn of the death of Kathryn Barnard (In Memoriam, August 2015). She was one of my heroes.

I attended a workshop at the University of Washington in the early 1970s organized by Barnard. T. Berry Brazelton was a speaker, and we were given mimeographed copies of his Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale as handouts. I so wish I had kept my copy!

Later, in the early 1980s, as a new doctoral graduate interested in establishing my own research, I visited Barnard for a consultation. She told me that before she finished one research project, she wrote another grant proposal. At that time, I believe she had had federal grant funding for 13 years. It was a somewhat overwhelming and intimidating model for my aspirations.

She left an outstanding legacy. I am proud to have known her.
